At the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, we’re making incredible strides in animal care, scientific discovery, and global conservation. But we can't do it without you.

Your support — through membership or a donation — directly helps us protect endangered species, advance groundbreaking research and create a brighter future for wildlife.

While federal funding ensures our animals receive top-notch care, we rely on passionate individuals like you to fund critical conservation programs and ensure the continued success of our mission. Together, we can make a world of difference.

Did you know you can amplify the impact of your donation to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute? Many employers (or their parent companies) offer programs to match charitable contributions for their current and retired employees.

Matching gift programs allow individuals and companies to work together to provide engaging experiences with animals, and to create and share knowledge to save wildlife and habitats. Matching your gift will increase your support of this critical mission.

To find out if your employer is a participant in the matching gifts program, search your company’s name below or contact our office at 202.633.3144 or email NZP-Advancement@si.edu.

Matching funds may not be used for membership.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute does not accept donations of live animals or food. Our animals are part of managed breeding programs that cannot be integrated with outside populations. Animals follow scientifically determined diets, sourced from reliable and certified providers.

However, we welcome donations of enrichment items. To help you select the right gift, contact us and we will happily direct you to an appropriate item for a particular species. To learn more about donating enrichment items, contact our office at 202.633.3144 or email NZP-Advancement@si.edu

Campaigns

In January 2025, giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao made their debut at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Their arrival marks a new decade in conservation and research. Over its decades of work, NZCBI’s efforts have helped increase the wild panda population by 17 percent, which has also benefited over 30 additional species in China. Through advancements in breeding and veterinary care, NZCBI continues to drive successful conservation. Your support is vital for the future of giant panda conservation.
